SECURING A CARDIFF TREASURE

Roath Park Conservatory

Roath Park Conservatory is a Victorian glasshouse in one of Cardiff's best known parks. Inside is a dense collection of rare and tropical plants, a pond, and live animals. It's an unusual and much-loved visitor attraction set in the sprawling gardens of Roath Park.

Naturally, the heat and humidity required inside the glasshouse is great for the wildlife - but not so good for security systems. Constant humidity and standing water rule out much of the usual kit, and the animals inside rule out motion sensors. Meanwhile, the planting is too dense to run cables through in any practical way.

After some security issues, Cardiff Council asked Tremorfa to devise a solution that would hold up in this challenging environment and keep the conservatory's full time residents safe.

Our Approach

A system built in layers for a unique environment

We walked the building with the council and designed a system around all of the constraints. It is fully wireless throughout, with every device rated for high humidity.

Around the outside of the building sits a passive infrared curtain detection, fitted tight against the structure and running the full perimeter.

Inside, vibration sensors fitted around the interior pick up any attempt to force the walls or the glazing. Door contacts cover the entrances, and an external sounder is fixed to the building. Wireless signal boosters were placed where the layout needed them.

Around the perimeter we added bilingual signage, in Welsh and English, asking the public to keep a metre back from the building while the alarm is live.

The Outcome

Back in service, and built to last

The conservatory now has working, monitored protection again, in a building with genuine environmental challenges. Since installation there have been no false alarms and no further security problems on site, with the animals and plants protected once more.
